Pavel. The First and the Last
Pavel I is often labeled as a tyrant and even a madman, but his character and story are much deeper than the mask that his descendants have unjustly placed upon him. The estrangement from his mother, rejection by the court, and endless attempts to understand who and why truly killed his father shaped a deeply tragic personality. After years of waiting, upon becoming emperor, Pavel sought to rid the nobility of their excesses and improve the lives of serfs and ordinary soldiers.
